Come to Me All You Who Are Weary and Burdened and I Will Give You Rest

Updated: May 22, 2021

Without God many hearts grow cold and become darkened. Weighting one down by consuming them with guilt and shame. God gives all of us many chances to come to repentance throughout our lifetime by warning us through his messengers or in many other different ways. In Revelation 3:20 God says, “I stand at the door [of your heart] and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” He is patient with us not wanting any of us to perish.

He can speak to one in a dream or a vision to turn them away from their wicked ways, as it is written in Job 33:14-20, when God says, “For God does speak now one way, now another-though no one perceives it. In a dream in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears to terrify them with warning, to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword. Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones, so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.” Similarly, Job 33:29-30 says “God does all these things to a person twice, even three times to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.” The book of Job explains how God warns individuals several times throughout their lifetime, hoping they will turn from their wicked ways and choose life over death. Without Christ's true light in our lives our minds remain darkened by a delusion.

Sin hardens the human heart and makes one believe they’re worthy without Christ. If we’ve lived without God our whole life we cannot realize the state our hearts are in and just how unclean our souls have become. God hopes to incline our mind to choose Him, but it's up to us to respond to that calling. Even after God reveals the state of our human condition many of us try to convince ourselves that we can make it without Christ. What many don’t realize is that every time we turn our Saviour down, our hearts become even more hardened and it will only lead us deeper into confusion and away from the voice of God. Many don’t trust God’s love and choose their own paths in life instead of doing His will. This leads to uncertainty and an un-birthed destiny. When evil continues in one’s life it blinds the human soul and makes them become ignorant to the truth of God’s Word. It is God’s Word of truth and obedience to Him that keeps one’s heart guarded from the lies of the enemy.

Man cannot serve two masters. We must decide if we show obedience to the flesh or Spirit, since these two are opposed to each other. It is this decision that will determine our eternal destiny.

Galatians 5:19-26 “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."

God is the only one who can change the desires of our heart and can give us strength to live a holy life. If one tries to let go of their sins or change a part of their personality through their own strength, they will often find that the part of them that they've worked so hard to eliminate will come back. His Spirit alone gives us the victory and places new desires within our soul. God is also constantly calling back those who grew up in churches and had a Christian background but began to drift away as they got older by listening to the voice of sin. Let all who have ears to hear and eyes to see surrender all into the loving arms of our Saviour. In Jeremiah 29:13, it says You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” No matter how much time passed by, God will always receive us back into His arms and welcome us back into His family.
